The latest serving of VeggieTales' offbeat life lessons teaches (but never preaches) the value of friendship and of being considerate of others. The main feature stars Larry the Cucumber as Sheerluck Holmes and his sidekick Bob the Tomato as Watson; together they are London's crack crime-solving team. But Sheerluck starts to take credit for all the duo's achievements, leaving Watson to stew in his own juices (and trust us, we've worked with cucumbers like that; it's no fun to be left out). When Watson sulks off, Sheerlock faces just what a pickle things can be without teamwork, thus emphasizing the Golden Rule: "Treat others as you want to be treated." Bonus features include a tale based on Don Quixote, with delicious surreal dreamscapes and a rich flamenco score. One of the disc's many highlights is the Silly Song with Larry, "The Gated Community," whose intricate harmonies and peppily clueless lyrical delivery are worthy of Gilbert & Sullivan (Filbert & Sullivan?). There's a great behind-the-scenes feature with the creators talking about how long they had wanted to bring this story to the screen; lots of kid-friendly games and sing-alongs; and even a yummy "Bean Dip of LaMancha" recipe that kids demonstrate how to make. The verdict on the entire disc? Delish. --A.T. Hurley

Customer Reviews for
Veggie Tales: Sheerluck Holmes and the Golden Ruler
Cleverly Written
We have all been guilty of taking too much credit for something we didn't do alone. This story is a reminder that we should not overlook the value of true friendship. Sheerluck learns that a true friend cares for his friends' feelings. The title gives it all away. We have to treat one another as you would want to be treated.
Your child will learn the important lesson to think about others feelings first. This is a very important lesson for toddlers. Especially when they are going through the "it's all about me" stage. Next time you need a reminder of how to treat others, just pop this story in. You won't be disappointed.Veggie Tales: Sheerluck Holmes and the Golden Ruler
Over thier head!
While I am usually a huge fan of Bid Idea and VeggieTales, this one went way over my kids' heads. Don Quiote? Come on! And while Sheerluck was funny in a slap-stick sort of way, there was too much going on visually to get the whole plot. Okay for kids 8 and up, but not for the little guys. Try instead the older VT movies like Dave and the Giant Pickle or The Toy the Saved Christmas.Veggie Tales: Sheerluck Holmes and the Golden Ruler
One of my sons favorites!!
I love veggie tales and they have great lessons they keep my 2 yr olds attention forever!!Veggie Tales: Sheerluck Holmes and the Golden Ruler
If you can last through the La Mancha skit....
I didn't love the La Mancha skit on this one. Neither did my children. However, we REALLY loved the silly song and the Sheerluck Holmes portion of this DVD. As always, the music is great and the humor is wonderful. The best part of course is the wonderful values taught. Thanks, Big Idea!Veggie Tales: Sheerluck Holmes and the Golden Ruler
Another 5 star Veggie!
Veggie Tales are a Great Buy for ANYONE. Although we have no children at home (grown and on their own) and no grandchildren... (yet)... we have every single Veggie Tale movie! They are entertaining, witty, light and a perfect quick watch before retiring after a long day! Always a great and thought provoking message to end your day with. By the way, KIDS LOVE them TOO! Even though some of the humor is over their heads, but we old folks can relate!Veggie Tales: Sheerluck Holmes and the Golden Ruler
