Although the title means something along the lines of "no need for Tenchi," everyone wants the hapless hero of this popular series. These 13 OAV episodes reunite the cast from the TV show, but with some changes. Sasami is initially much younger and less domestic; grandfather Masaki turns out to be Yosho, the long-lost Jurai prince who was betrothed to Ayeka centuries ago; genius-in-residence Wasshu reveals an unexpected bond with interstellar outlaw Ryoko. The tone is a little racier than the broadcast version: Ryoko runs around naked and the attempts to seduce the terminally klutzy Tenchi are more pointed.

In the first adventure (episodes 1-7), Tenchi inadvertently wakes a mummified demon who was imprisoned at the Masaki family shrine 700 years ago--none other than space pirate extraordinaire Ryoko. The problems she causes are dwarfed by the arrival of Jurai princesses Ayeka and Sasami, bubble-brained Galactic Police Agent Miyoshi--and interstellar criminal Kagato. Assuming the role (and costume) of the Crown Prince of Jurai, Tenchi defeats the evil Kagato with a magic sword that resembles the lightsabers in Star Wars.

Unexpected arrivals keep the Masaki household in chaos in the later, shorter adventures (episodes 8-13), including a baby cousin of Tenchi's, a shape-shifting robot who impersonates Ryoko, and the Emperor and Empress of Jurai. The writers occasionally lose track of the plot, especially in episode 13, "Here Comes Jurai," but Tenchi has never been noted for its logic. In all the episodes, the filmmakers manage to balance interplanetary threats, teenage romance, and broad comedy with their usual aplomb.

The Tenchi Encyclopedia (powered by Wasshu OS) offers short biographies of the main characters with clips and stills, pencil tests, digital comics, Japanese commercials, and full credits for the series. A must-have for Tenchi fans. --Charles Solomon

Customer Reviews for Tenchi Muyo - OVA DVD Boxed Set

No Need? No way!
I've been a fan of this OVA series since '96, when I was first turned onto it by the Anime Society at the University of Texas at Austin (Yes, that's what they called themselves). Those were great days for anime, not a lot of people were aware of the genre yet, so it was still a very subversive (and cool) thing to be an otaku. I promptly picked up the first seven episodes on VHS at A-kon that year, and over the years, I've lost this tape and that, until I've only got a few episodes left. But I digress. I think it's wonderful to have the whole thing on DVD. Say what you want of the follow-ups and TV series, nothing tops the original. I recommend this series to anyone who hasn't seen it.Tenchi Muyo - OVA DVD Boxed Set

Highly recommended!
I'm not much of an anime person anymore. At least, that was until I thought of Tenchi Muyo. I remember how I loved the story and how attached I was to the characters. This series has a heart to it. I just wish some cartoon makers out there would become inspired by what the directore of this series has done.Tenchi Muyo - OVA DVD Boxed Set

Tenchi OVA DVD
I have always loved Tenchi Muyo and all of it's series, but this is the best (the original). I received this box set in perfect condition and it is abosutely beautiful. The episodes are are not only funny, but they make you just wish you could just drop in. The best part I think is that this is the REAL version, not cut at all... it's the way it was supposed to be seen.Tenchi Muyo - OVA DVD Boxed Set

This set the standard for both quality and storylines for other Anime

I love this show! I don't care if anybody thinks Cowboy Bebop or Samurai Champloo is better because they're not. I mean they're both great shows, but Tenchi Muyo set standards so high in terms of storytelling, imagination and emotional impact that I don't think any Anime will achieve any time soon.

This is the first and probably the best of the three other Tenchi series, Tenchi Universe and Tenchi in Tokyo are both equally sublime but this particular series is probably the most influential and least confusing. I don't know how to explain it but it has a unique "touch" to it.

Anyway, the story is about teenaged boy named Tenchi Masaki. Tenchi is the grandson of a Juraian prince named Yosho who had imprisoned a "demon" named Ryoko, who is a 5,000 year old wanted criminal that was imprisoned for 700 years by Yosho and gets accidentally released by Tenchi. But after losing a battle to Tenchi (or more importantly Tenchi's ancestral sword that comes to life when he's under attack) she moves in with him. But then Ayeka and Sasami, the 1st and 2nd princess of Jurai, come to earth in search of Ayeka's half Bother/fiance and Ryoko.

I don't want to give too much of the story away, but you'll just have to see it for yourself. Don't worry you won't be sorry. Few Animes have captured my attention or even make an impression on me, but this blew me away and continues to do so again and again. This show actually made me care about the story and the characters. There are happy moments that make you laugh, and sad moments that make you sad sympathetic. this is definitly worth your money.Tenchi Muyo - OVA DVD Boxed Set
