"Roy Orbison is the greatest singer in the world." –Elvis Presley. Sweet Dreams, Baby
I actually had intended to see and review Roy Orbison's legendary musical documentary Black and White Nights- the one where the likes of Tom Waits, k.d. Lang and Bruce Springsteen sat in. At least that is what I thought I had ordered. Instead I received this bio pic which while not the same as I desired nevertheless is a nice valentine to one of the founder's of rock and roll, crooner style.
Roy Orbison `s music formed the backdrop for more than one high school dance or other social event in the old days. This film charts his rise as singer from his early days of trying to get in the door at Sun records to his first successful writing for the Everly Brothers and then his own stardom. People are probably more familiar with his later work like Blue Bayou and Pretty Baby but he along with Booby Vee, Ricky Nelson and others were the clean rock balladeers of the late 1950's when you were checking out that girl or guy - you know, the quieter time between bouts of Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard.
As usual with these biopics you get plenty of `talking head' interviews with later musicians explaining the influence that Orbison had on them. Here the likes of Bono, Robert Plant and Bruce Springsteen pay homage to the master. Heck, some of the Springsteen segment is from that Black and White documentary that I had expected. I still want to get that classic, as should you, but you should check this one out too if you are any kind of an Orbison fan.

Excellent biography of Roy Orbison. Information about him is hard to come by, especially his personality. This DVD covers his life from youth on with interviews of those who knew him well. It gave me a much better understanding of someone who was evidently a nice man as well as a great singer. In Dreams
Roy is great - editing...so so
You have to be a REAL bad editor to kill this marvelous artist , but by golly...they've done that!
no sensitivity whatsoever to cocert footage which is chopped like a bad "mohell" from hell. and just like a grown up average jewish kid...i didn't like it a bit.
The voice over comes right before the musical picks instead of flowing before or after the songs , creating a horrible hybrid -no concert and no documentary.
I'll probably rewrap it and stick it to the next sixtysomething surprise birthday boy.
Surprise THIS!

Absolutely fantastic - Roy is a musical Genius
This is a must-buy for any fan of Roy Orbison. I bought the Asian version in Taiwan, but the content is the same. Each of the songs sung by Roy are treasures and the DVD has several of his best selling, most famous tunes. In addition, included are less popular, but equally marvelous songs (such as Walk On - in a performance that brings goose bumps to my arms each time I play it). Enjoying Roy perform would be enough reason to buy the DVD, but what makes this DVD extra special is the insight that many talented performers give between songs into how revolutionary was Roy in his song writing technique and also in how he recorded songs. I knew Roy was big, but I had no idea that he had influenced so many big names in the music industry. Listening to the Bee Gees, Bono, KD Lang and many others explain in what ways Roy influenced them is a truly insightful and interesting interlude to each song. I cannot recommend this DVD more highly. In Dreams
