Editorial Reviews and
DVD Information about
Pride & Prejudice
Description
One of the greatest love stories of all time, Pride & Prejudice, comes to the screen in a glorious new adaptation starring Keira Knightley. When Elizabeth Bennett (Knightley) meets the handsome Mr. Darcy (Matthew MacFadyen), she believes he is the last man on earth she could ever marry. But as their lives become intertwined in an unexpected adventure, she finds herself captivated by the very person she swore to loathe for all eternity. Based on the beloved masterpiece by Jane Austen, it is the classic tale of love and misunderstanding that sparkles with romance, wit and emotional force. Critics are calling it "Exhilarating. A joy from start to finish" (Carina Chocano, Los Angeles Times).

Literary adaptations just don't get any better than director Joe Wright's 2005 version of Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice. The key word here is adaptation, because Wright and gifted screenwriter Deborah Moggach have taken liberties with Austen's classic novel that purists may find objectionable, but in this exquisite film their artistic decisions are entirely justified and exceptionally well executed. It's a more rural England that we see here, circa 1790 (as opposed to Austen's early 19th century), in which Elizabeth Bennet (Keira Knightley) is one of several sisters primed for marriage, with an anxious mother (Brenda Blethyn) only too desperate to see her daughters paired off with the finest, richest husbands available. Elizabeth is strong-willed and opinionated, but her head (not to mention her pride and prejudice) lead her heart astray when she meets the wealthy Mr. Darcy (Matthew Macfadyen), whose own sense of decency and discretion (not to mention his pride and prejudice) prevent him from expressing his mutual affection. They're clearly meant for each other, and as Knightley's performance lights up the screen (still young enough to be girlishly impertinent, yet wise beyond her 20 years), Austen's timeless romance yields yet another timeless adaptation, easily on par with the beloved BBC miniseries that has been embraced by millions since originally broadcast in 1995. Individual tastes will vary as to which version should be considered "definitive," but with a stellar supporting cast including Judi Dench and Donald Sutherland, this impeccable production achieves its own kind of perfection. --Jeff Shannon

Pride & Prejudice
Pride & Prejudice
A few just like Lady Catherine
So funny that most the BBC afiocionados not to mention the Jane Austen Society are up in arms over the P&P 2005 version. The reviews are as condescending as "Lady Catherine"-- as if the BBC version is above reproach.
So if this version is just SOOOO bad and SOOO not Austen, why did it get universal rave critics reviews (critics as we know can be very nasty), got nominations with BAFTA, got Keira Knightley an Oscar nom and Golden Globe nom and is in a quite a few of top 10 films of 2005? Because its a splendid adaptation in cinema form.
This is what I don't get with all the gripes against it which I have read. Movies are a different art on its own, so is TV and so are books.
Be thankful that its been well done on the acting level (yes, Keira had moments of being a little too "modern" but overall was outstanding), cinematography is just gorgeous, score was very classy and the camera work was unbelievable. The "realistic" approach was refreshing as well. When I was watching the movie, I felt exactly like how I felt with the Lord of the Rings trilogy-- I was transported to another world, in this case back in time.
Quite a number of the review reeks of condescencion of the highest order. Get off your high horse. Appreciate it for the artform that it was adapted in. Hollywood spews out so much trash that I could not believe that this wonderful romantic film did not have graphic sex and swearing. We actually need more of these kind of clean wholesome movies.
The BBC was good as a literal interpretation/adaptation of the book. However, it felt like a play (not a hair out of place on any of the characters) and not the form of media that its supposed to be. In addition, I found Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth's acting wooden, their lines sprung out of the book verbatim.
In closing, I love, love, love the 2005 version. Yes, it may be condensed and is not perfect by any means. But as a form of cinema, its one of those rare movies I will enjoy many, many years from now and will be a classic in its own rightPride & Prejudice
Beauty cannot save bad acting or annoying lip habits (Keira)
This really is a pretty movie- but lets cut to the chase. Keira Knightly sufficiently butchers her role by concentrating waaay too much of her energ into puffing her lips out in an extremely annoying fashion. Any scenes with her are ruined by her aweful habits. So basically the whole movie. Yeah..
And the actor wo plays darcy is flat so any chemistry that might be is nipped in the bud between the lippy twit and the flat guy.
Finally, the Bennetts were a part of the lower UPPER class which means that, no,there would not be livestock running about their house. Sorry! So this movie is not worth your time- watch the one with Colin Firth for some amazing acting and more accurate interpretation.Pride & Prejudice
much like the book
I really love the book and the movie is interestingly adapted to fit well. It is somewhat different form the book but what's really nice about the movie is that having read the book you know that there was Mr. Darcy had a magical attraction to Elizabeth by that formed rather slowly and in confidence of her as she spent time at their company, caring for her ill sister. In the book you get a little of his side of the emotional development and the movie does a really great job at bringing those very same feeling out in the open. Really great acting. Always love movies with Keira Knightley.Pride & Prejudice
Absolutely Awesome Movie
I never saw Pride & Prejudice when it was in the theaters. In March I saw it for the first time on a cable tv program and was absolutely enthralled! The storyline is great, the actors/actresses were all superb and the scenery was breathtaking. I know that Keira Knightley was nominated for best actress that year and I can see why. She is amazing. I also think that Matthew MacFadyen brought just the right touch to his portrayal of Mr. Darcy. He was sexy, dreamy, and sensitive. I bought this DVD so that I could watch this romantic movie whenever I wanted and I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to get caught up in another era.Pride & Prejudice
