A sterling cast and vivid direction give North Country an emotional heft to match its political convictions. Charlize Theron (Monster) plays Josey Aimes, who goes to work at a Minnesota steel mine after splitting with her violent husband.

Frances McDormand and Charlize
Theron in North Country.
But the job proves to be almost as harrowing as her marriage; the male miners, resentful of women taking jobs, verbally abuse and play humiliating pranks on the female miners. After being physically assaulted by a coworker, Josey tries to fight against the harassment, but none of the other women will join her case for fear that things will only get worse. North Country, directed by Niki Caro (Whale Rider), makes the women's experience palpable for the audience without overdoing it. But the lawsuit is only part of the movie; the gut impact of North Country comes from the devastating effect the lawsuit has on Josey's family, friends, and coworkers--thanks to an incredible ensemble cast that includes Sissy Spacek (In the Bedroom), Sean Bean (Lord of the Rings), Richard Jenkins (Six Feet Under), Woody Harrelson (The People vs. Larry Flynt), and the always powerful Frances McDormand (Fargo, Mississippi Burning). The courtroom histrionics don't always ring true, but the family conflict is riveting and deeply moving. Based on the book Class Action: The Story of Lois Jenson and the Landmark Case That Changed Sexual Harassment Law. --Bret Fetzer

Customer Reviews for North Country (Widescreen Edition)

North Counrty
Oscar winner Chalize Theron stars in 'North Country'. -All she wanted to do was work and be able to earn a living at her job -- nothing doing!!! Wonderful movie in the way 'Silkwood' was a wonderful movie... Doing the Best they can: This type of GRIT and earned success doesn't come around everyday: Senator Hillary Clinton has it: In the 2008 Presidential Primary race, Hillary Clinton not only earned more votes than any of her rivals, she earned more votes than any other Presidential Primary candidate in the history of America (and earned 311 electoral votes, to her Party's presumptive nominee who earned 227 - 270 needed to win in November - On August 28,2008, the Party chooses it's nominee for President)North Country (Widescreen Edition)

I searched high and low at various outlet stores for this movie (I had borrowed it from a friend and while on a trip lost the DVD) and was not having any luck. A friend suggested I try AMAZON.com and I could not believe my luck, not only did I find it, but at a great price too. I had the DVD within a week of ordering. I will definitely turn to AMAZON for my future purchases.North Country (Widescreen Edition)

Damn Nation
This movie is very powerful, and you may only be able to
watch it once, but if you don't get the message with the
first viewing, will you ever get it?

Why would a woman work in a coal mine, if she doesn't
have to? Woody Harrelson's character tells her that
she could start over somewhere else, find a guy...But
she tells him that she doesn't want help. And that
she needs that high-paying job to help her son.

(Some economists call it the "beauty premium":
Modelling, it would seem, is higly competitive, and
only a few may find work as a "super model": Others
need something to "fall back on", like coal mining,
or a lottery ticket.)

The woman was created FOR the man, and not the other
way around. Wherefore, he feels a NEED for her, but
she may only WANT him, if he is useful.

Charlize's character wants to raise her son on her own.

I don't want to give away too many details, but
basically, the movie asks the question, What are you
supposed to do when you see sheep being slaughtered?
Can you really just stand around, and watch, or will
you intervene?

Never linger. Don't hesitate. For it is not a
choice, but a commandment: Refuse the evil, and
choose the good.

In this movie, many fail to do that, and then later,
seek repentance, hoping for forgiveness.

The way Charlize plays this character is interesting,
she does it with restraint. When she is angry, she
does not explode, but is restrained, in a saintly
manner, like a smoldering wick. Watching this film,
it was surprising her character did not show up for
work, or a hockey game, with an assault rifle. It was
as if she felt guilty for being angry, as if she had
grown up around anger and did not want herself to be
as the others around her, no matter what the cost.
And the cost is high. NEITHER A VICTIM, nor a
victimizer be. She comes across as a person who bends
like a reed in the wind, to her own hurt. She is as a
bruised reed. But when a lawyer finally offers to
help, things start to add up in her favour. There is
safety in numbers, and so a herd begins to become a
flock. But only after one, and then two, fight for
them. Or are they fighting for themselves, if not
each other?

Watching this film, you have to wonder why anybody
would choose to work in a mine, male or female.
One of the characters puts it like this: "The mine in
this town is 'bread and butter' for a lot of families".
And because people are fearful of not being able to
fill their bellies with "bread and butter", they turn
a blind eye to the sheep being slaughtered. Most of
the males in this movie, come across as Canaanites
(Sons of Ham): Their god is their belly, and they are
profane. Behaviour matters. Will you trust in earthly
riches? Do birds collect welfare checks? I think I
once saw a bird "catching" a worm, at three in the
afternoon. What are the true riches? Be not afraid of
success, be afraid of failure, of failing to help
another.

Watching this movie, you might draw the conclusion that
it is the lot of the wicked to die alone in coal mining
towns, but the men who wear suits and run the company
are portrayed as monsters as well. Morality is not what
they care about, only profits and avoiding costly
lawsuits.

Some in this town have families, but do they love them?
For to LOVE somebody is to WANT that person to be holy.
How badly you WANT somebody will show, like when she
drags her son out of a car, to teach him the meaning of
self-respect, hers.

What are the true riches? Who has wisdom? Who seeks
wisdom? Who desires truth? Many are on a treadmill, and
can't figure how to get off, so that they might accumulate
for themselves. In the movie, the lawyer, the drunkard,
has time to think, to strategize, to do good. He is not a
sluggard, like most of the people in this town.

See, Proverbs 6:6-11 ; Matthew 6:26, KJV.

This movie is thought provoking:
Some speak of a "glass ceiling", but who speaks of the "iron
cellars"? What does "equal pay for work of equal value" mean?
Are not all coal miners paid the same? Pay equity is not the
same as work equity. Ever wonder why construction workers who
work 40 stories up, do not wear parachutes? Males fear other
males, for males are brought up to be competitive. Are not
boys in high school athletic programs being coerced into
showering together, as are male prisoners? When will females
care enough to protest for the rights (dignity) of males?
When will males learn "self-respect"? A legal right is not
the same as a moral right.North Country (Widescreen Edition)

IT'S ONLT ME BUT:
GOOD STORY ABOUT A SINGLE MOM TRYING TO IMPROVE HER LIFE WORKING A A COAL MINE TO EARN MORE MONEY. SHOWS THE PREJUDICE SHOWN BY THE MEN WHO DON'T WANT WOMEN TO WORK THERE. A SECONDARY ISSUE IS THE STORY ABOUT THE RAPE THAT RESULTED IN HER SON, THAT SHE HAS NEVER TALKED ABOUT. IT ALL COMES OUT IN THE END. JMNorth Country (Widescreen Edition)

Women's Rights
It has been a few years since I last watched North Country! I am actually from Minnesota, so it is kinda cool for once in a good time to see a Minnesota movie, but also to see some history of Minnesota in itself.

Charlize Theron does a great performance of not only acting in this film, but to portray the true story of what some of these women went through in the steel mining industry!

This movie is inspiring because not only does this movie get the message to the audience that sexual abuse and harassment does happen within the work place and outside of the work place behind closed doors, but it gets across the positive message that any woman is of equal importance as a man in the work field and off the work field and that women these days stand up and speak out on behalf of other women and for themselves for women's rights!! Women aren't just an object in American society and Charlize Theron will let you know about it!

Overall, great movie in the non-fictional standpoint!North Country (Widescreen Edition)
