Editorial Reviews and DVD Information about Air America

Description
Mel Gibson and Robert Downey, Jr. are two renegade pilots ensnared in the madness of covert operations over Laos during the Vietnam conflict. They lead the crew of AIR AMERICA, a not-so-secret airline that drops everything from live pigs to opium over villages throughout the Vietnam countryside. Join Mel, Robert and the crazy crew of wartime flyers in the funniest action-comedy since "Lethal Weapon 2" and "Good Morning, Vietnam."

Air America is one of those movies that could have been great, and now maintains its low-key reputation as a typical Mel Gibson film in the wake of his first two Lethal Weapon hits. Originally conceived as a biting black comedy about the CIA's top-secret smuggling operation in Laos during the Vietnam war, Air America lost most of its political sting when it was transformed into an action comedy for Gibson and costar Robert Downey Jr. The film is entertaining as far as it goes, with a few action sequences that explain where a lot of the budget went. If you're in the mood for some Mel, this one is a little off the beaten path, and still contains a percentage of its original potential. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews for Air America

SCRIPT WRITERS, NO EXPERIENCE NEEDED, HOLLYWOOD AWAITS YOU
Air America is a movie for lovers of the Police academy movies or fools who spend more time hi five-ing their buddies at sporting events than watching the game. DUDE! Yes you. Mel Gibson and Robert Downey JR, head an embarrassing cast of actors playing lovable rogue types in this attempt at ironic comedy. The comedy is a stream of one liners and smart replies to each other and senior authority figures. The scripting is so poor that canned laughter would not be out of place in this dull movie begging the audience for laughs.
The producers of the movie used local villages as extras who frequently shot at the cast during filming. A Laotian spokesmen explained the villagers position. "It's not that the movie showing the C.I.A making money illegally in Laos that is upsetting. It's the fact that two major American actors with long term drug problems should have characters which ultimately are the hero's saving our "downtrodden masses."
Chuck Norris has already done this part of the world no end of damage. Now we have a 4th rate comedy written by army recruiters associated with Laos!"Air America

Air America
Great movie, the photography was excellent and the actors played believable rolls. I think the story line was true in many ways.
I rate this as a must see for everyone late teens and older!Air America

Classic 80s Movie
Sarcastic humor on top of a deep message about the American chapter of Viet Nam. I enjoyed the movie and Gibson and Downey delivered stellar performances. Really made you think how our government worked with other governments to deliver Holiday Inns (own and opperate).Air America

Air America
I consider this one of Robert Downey Jr. better movies and you have to say that Mel Gibson did a wonderful job as well.Air America

Underrated And Unappreciated
Mel Gibson and Robert Downey Jr. both in vintage form doing what they both do best - combing action and adventure with just the right amount dark humor. If you are a fan of either there is more than enough to keep you busy and it is well worth adding to your collection.Air America
