Lois & Clark was one of the sweetest surprises of the 1993 television season, and while it certainly enjoyed a devoted following until the series jumped the tall building in its later years, we can probably thank the Phoenix-like rise of Desperate Housewives' Teri Hatcher's career to thank for its arrival on DVD. The premise of Lois & Clark is one fraught with peril, particularly for core fans. This incarnation of the Man of Steel saga recasts Superman as romantic comedy. One of the series creators once described this series as "basically, Moonlighting, only Bruce Willis can fly." This is overstating the case by leaps and bounds. Clark Kent (Dean Cain) has not been reinvented as a wisecracking street-wise hipster. The chemistry between the new Metropolis arrival and rookie Daily Planet scribe and ace investigative reporter Lois Lane (Hatcher) is not as sexually charged as David and Maddie, and their banter is not as sharp. But as with Moonlighting it would be a few seasons before the two lovelorn characters consummated their attraction.

The dramatic arc of this inaugural season is "the fall of the house of Luthor," but at its heart is the triangle between Clark, Lois, and the charming snake Lex Luthor (John Shea), who, in the pilot episode, Superman vows to bring to justice ("Let the games begin," Luthor responds). Further complicating matters is that Superman has literally swept Lois off her feet. But until the episode "Barbarians at the Planet," in which Lex proposes to Lois, Lois professes her love to Superman, and Clark confesses his love to Lois, Lois & Clark breezily tweaks the touchstones of Superman iconography. "I've never noticed it before," a "drunk with love" Lois observes to a bespectacled Clark in "Pheremone, My Lovely," "You look a lot like Superman." Though special effects have progressed since the 1990s, Lois & Clark has lost little of its sparkle and panache, thanks to its super leads, whose fledgling careers soared to dizzying new heights. --Donald Liebenson

Customer Reviews for Lois & Clark - The New Adventures of Superman - The Complete First Season

A Great 90's Show Of A Romanticized Look At Clark Kent&Lois Lane
I remember when the show first aired I actually never really saw it in my mind I thought it would be to lovey dovey and they would make the Superman on the show to wussy. But now after watching a few episodes on TNT and getting the season sets I see that I was mistaken about the show entirely yes it is a more romantic view on Lois and Clark but they didn't really lessen the image of Superman's character as much as I thought they would. The effects aren't the greatest obviously but we have to remember that this was in the mid 90's and cgi effects weren't used a great deal unless it was a sci-fi show like Star Trek or Babylon 5. The actors did a great job for their individual characters(Dean Cain As Clark Kent/Superman,Teri Hatcher As Lois Lane,Lane Smith As Perry White,Michael Landes As Jimmy Olsen in the first season than Justin Whalin As Jimmy Olsen for the rest of the show,Eddie Jones As Jonathan Kent,K Callan As Martha Kent, and finally John Shea As Lex Luthor.) The season sets come with commentaries from the producers and some of the actors as well the video is standard format but the pictures are exceptionally clear the audio is also very well done. So to all Superman fans who are looking for a great show that has bot action and romance check these sets out I think you'll be amazed at how great they really are...Lois & Clark - The New Adventures of Superman - The Complete First Season

"Superman Seems to Have Stuck"
In this modern (read early 90's) take on the classic American Superhero, things are pretty much as we'd expect. Clark Kent (Dean Cain) has moved to Metropolis and gotten a job at the Daily Planet. He is teamed with investigative reporter Lois Lane (Teri Hatcher) as they investigate stories for the newspaper under the demanding eye of editor Perry White (Lane Smith). Rounding out the newspaper staff is eager young reporter/photographer Jimmy Olsen (Michael Landes) and society (gossip) columnist Cat Grant (Tracy Scoggin).

But Clark Kent has a secret. He's not a normal human but a man with extraordinary superpowers. In order to keep that a secret, he takes on the identity of Superman, a fact that comes in handy since many of the stories he a Lois investigate seem to include lots of danger. There's the sabotage of a space station. A gang of thieves use invisibility suits to pull off their crimes. A freak heat wave sends Superman behind bars when he is blamed. An asteroid hurtling toward earth gives Superman (and Clark) amnesia. A rival newspaper keeps scooping The Planet. And the staff of The Planet becomes hostages in their own office.

Behind many of the problems is one man, Lex Luther (John Shea). And while Lois has a crush on Superman (ignoring Clark in the bargain), Lex is pursuing her. Will she discover how evil he is in time or will she fall in love with the villain?

I'm not too familiar with any of the incarnations of Superman, but that hardly matters here. It builds its own mythology, while keeping many of the things familiar to fans of the comics. And the emphasis here is on the romance. In fact, it would be fair to say this is Superman as romantic comedy. There are several pretty funny episodes in this set, but they are balanced by some of the more serious, episodes that managed to pull at my heart strings.

And yes, there is plenty of action. Some of the special effects do seem dated today, but they hold up for the most part.

Everything is tied together well by the acting, including K Callan and Eddie Jones as Martha and Jonathan Kent. And you can feel the chemistry between Dean Cain and Teri Hatcher.

My only complaint with the season is the under use of Lex. He is often shown and used. But, unlike today's shows, nothing truly builds until the last couple of episodes. Instead it feels like every episode they forget what came before so they don't build anything.

Still, that frustration is minor. On the whole, this is a fun show. It probably doesn't have the mythology completely right. But it entertains in spades.Lois & Clark - The New Adventures of Superman - The Complete First Season

So HAPPY to have discovered this show!
Better late than never... I just recently discovered "Lois and Clark" thanks to some fellow Smallville fans. After tentatively buying season one, I rushed to get the rest of the series. My only complaint has been that there are only four seasons to buy.

I honestly don't know why I didn't watch this show when it was on the air... I remember thinking that Dean Cain was just not my idea of how Superman should look, but I got over that about 30 seconds into the pilot on DVD. Dean is delicious in tights and makes a great Superman! But he's even better as Clark Kent. I love the way he portrays Clark as a sweet, sensitive guy, who is also very competent and no pushover when it comes to dealing with Lois. You can tell why she eventually falls for him. And Terry Hatcher plays the best Lois I've ever seen. The chemistry between her and Dean is tangible and mesmerizing.

Sometimes the plots are silly and the special effects are primitive, but after awhile that just adds to the charm of the show. The characters were so well written and played, they didn't have to rely on fancy effects. The ups and downs, and twists and turns of the unfolding relationship between Lois and Clark makes this show totally addicting!Lois & Clark - The New Adventures of Superman - The Complete First Season

'Superman' fanatic!
Loved it! Great show, and ideal for a Superman fanatic to own. It's something I can always watch again and again without getting bored. Awesome story line!Lois & Clark - The New Adventures of Superman - The Complete First Season

good memories revisited
Smallville/Lois & Clark/Adventures of Superman: Season 1 CollectionI had seen this series on SABC 1 many years ago when I lived in my house before life's little surprises(my father' illness and death) and when I got a computer and discovered the joys of Amazon I looked for the series and decided with very little doubt to buy it. It is just as good as I remembered or rather even better. It and Superman Returns go together. Both betray a real person that you would like to rescue you. Lois @ Clark is filled with humour and action. It makes you want to live in their world and be as hopefull and as adventurous as they were. It brings out the magic that is in life if only we could see it or were brave enough to dare to live it. I think that this series, after I get them all, are going to be on of my treasures. Especially for those days when you wish you had slept through. I highly recomend it to anyone who wants some fun in life.Lois & Clark - The New Adventures of Superman - The Complete First Season
