Customer Reviews
Great Classic Concert Rock!
Definition of loud and large - Deep Purple gets it right - well worth it!
Amazing performance
There's something unique in this show. The vibe, the dynamics, the individual performances... everything is captured to perfection here (nevermind the generally poor video quality comparing to today's standards... This was never meant to be released as a DVD!).
AS always, unfortunately, Deep Purple left a lot of great songs out of the set list, in order to perform an indulgent and overlong "Space Truckin" version, the kind of "love it or hate it" thing they did at the time.
But it's great. Really, the sniffing of Glenn Hughes is sad... But the voice of the guy and Coverdale's quality are amazing. Paice also is performing at the top of his game and Lord is perfect as always.
AMAZING!!!
IT'S LIKE A DREAM, WATCHING ONE OF THE BEST BANDS OF THE WORLD IN ACTION, IT'S JUST AMAZING...RITCHIE BLACKMORE IS AN INSPIRATION FOR MOST OF THE ROCKERS AROUND THE WORLD!!
Another Version But It's Good
After watching this DVD in comparison against my old VHS bootleg of the same show, I was impressed with the audio but I was more than slightly disappointed in the video.
However at $12.99 to $15.00, it is a good value.
I would have paid more for a better video transfer.
Yes, the footage is over 30 years old but this is from ABC television and not cheap German TV footage. I expected the video to be quite a bit better than my VHS copy and I'm not sure it even matches the quality of my VHS bootleg.
The sound quality is excellent and is the main reason to purchase this DVD.
Excellent Deep Purple/70's Time Capsule
1974 brought the new,NEW Deep Purple with replacement vocalist and bassist Gillan and Glover sacked by replacement vocalist and bassist/vocalist David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes. Ritchie Blackmore was said to be looking for a "bluesier" sound and the album "Burn" and this concert supporting the new band and sound showcases this change.
Historically (if it's even important) seems to be the change from hippie-esque psychadelia to a more metal sound on "In Rock" and "Machine Head" to a more blues based sound on "Burn". Paul Rodgers of Free (later Bad Company) was rumored to be on Blackmores shortlist for vocals for the "Burn" album and hearing Coverdale's growl, one can understand why.David Coverdale brings more of a classic rock voice to the band and puts the sound in new light, arguably better.
It's amazing this video exists in any form. It's not particularly high quality and the equipment used to film shows it's limitations, from the ABC In Concert graphics to the cheesy Don Imus (yes, that Don Imus) airport introduction. Rumor has it there is ONLY one copy of the audio recording of California Jam, owned by New Yorker who recorded it from a radio broadcast as a teen.I wish demand was great enough to have the video remastered, but because of the low quality of the video, it loses a star.
The concert is great. "Burn" opens the set with smoking key and guitar solos and great shrieking by Glenn Hughes. GH's vocals are a little overdone on "Space Truckin" or the impromptu that finishes "Smoke on the Water" but this man does have some pipes and his backup and harmonizing are a great compliment to Coverdales lower range.
"You Fool No One" is another standout, great dual vocals, a mutated guitar riff by Blackmore that later surfaces in some form on Rainbows first album, and an keyboard throttling, percussive sound that rings like a distant cousin to sounds by Yes or Santana.
The drum/guitar/keyboard solos are lengthy, usually for the better. "Mistreated" wails masterfully as the California sun sets on Blackmore and the band and stoner fans color the sky with bottle rockets.
The finale need to be seen to be believed, somewhat Spinal Tap-ish, but this was 1974 after all and if Blackmore bought it, he can do he wants with it.
I'd love to see this whole show on DVD one day, Black Sabbath, ELP,Black Oak Arkansas, the Eagles etc. etc
