The second season of Leave It to Beaver finds the Cleaver family happy and wholesome as ever, with most episodes involving the Beaver getting into a scrape, or hearing the from-the-mountaintop advice from Mom or Dad afterwards. Despite the formula, the episodes hold up well, because of the earnestness of the actors and the delivery of their lines, which is, well, swell. Mom June (Barbara Billingsley) is the matriarch who makes it all look easy in her well-pressed frocks and pearls (pay close attention to those necklaces--there are actually several; some plain strands and some with pendants), and Dad Ward (Hugh Beaumont) is thoughtful and a little monolithic. But it's the adventures of boys, older brother Wally (Tony Dow) and the Beav (Jerry Mathers), that make the show so fun. One episode involves Beav and pal Larry (Rusty Stevens) playing hooky (they're late to school anyway, and they figure they may as well get "killed" later as opposed to today), and then winding up on live TV, on a show which June just happens to be watching. Moral? Golly gee, there's more than one, and they're delivered by both parents and Beav's teacher--and echoed earnestly by Beaver himself. The chuckles come in a ready stream, even if sometimes inadvertently. Sample exchange: Wally: "Mom, can I get tattooed?" June: "Tattooed!? Absolutely not!" Wally: "Oh, OK. Bye." No wonder people are so nostalgic for the '50s--teenagers never gave anyone any lip. This season, 1957-58, contains 39 remastered episodes on three double-sided discs, and is a treasure box of nostalgia, in the absolute best sense. --A.T. Hurley

They switched networks after Series Two
The show originally switched to a new network after the second series back in the 50's. That's why there's a huge delay between the second and third series releases today. It's due to present corporate ownership rights so there's another pile of red tape that has to be sifted through to get the rest of the LITB series out there. Universal/GE owns the first two but not the rest.

SIMPLER TIMES, SIMPLER PROBLEMS
These stories were offered on TV when a little kid's biggest problem was how to earn a "whole three dollars!" to buy someone a Christmas present, deal with the local bully, or go on a first date. They may not speak to today's kids, but they sure do to those of us old enough to remember a kid's life then. The actors have all settled into their roles very well in the 2nd season. The writing seemed better this season, too. I so hope that Season Three will be released to DVD. The show was well worth watching for the first four or five seasons, until the boys grew out of type of stories the writers were delivering. Maybe if the writers had grown with them, the series would have retained their appeal in the last couple of seasons. GIVE US SEASON THREE!!!Leave It to Beaver - The Complete Second Season

Oh Mrs. Cleaver, Won't Ya' Please Show Us the Beaver!
If you're waiting for Universal to release the goods, you maybe waiting a long while. The word on Mapleton Drive (or Pine Street) is that sales aren't what the Universal suits wanted to see. How could they be, when you charge a suggested retail of $49.99 - CREEPS! Not even the 'Beav' is worth that much. And while I'm not much of a fan of the show, it had its "charming" moments; and was a foundation for situational comedy sitcoms. What is the hold up
What is taking so long to get seasons 3 thru 6 out? It is in these years when Eddie Haskell gets older and starts to really become the snake we all loved. Episodes like Beaver making a face in the school picture and Beaver falling into the soup bowl billboard are included here. If universal is not going to do this, hopefully somebody else will.
