DVD Information about
A Nightmare on Elm Street
Description
Digitally remastered, this is the original Nightmare film that started it all. Written and directed by Wes Craven and starring Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger, A Nightmare on Elm Street remains an innovative and shocking horror-fantasy. Wes Craven's 1984 horror film is a better movie than it is generally credited for being. Forget the tawdry sequels; this highly original, almost surrealist work stars Robert Englund as a mutilated monster who kills teenagers during their dreams. Craven, who only directed one Elm Street sequel (Wes Craven's New Nightmare), takes the Hitchcockian step of layering in psychological explanations for the terror and then proving them all irrelevant in the face of mindless evil. The horror in the film is emotionally raw, in contrast to the overimaginative set pieces of most of the sequels that followed; and the final scene is as deeply unsettling as anything Luis Buñuel ever committed to film. --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews for
A Nightmare on Elm Street
The Classic 'Nightmare on Elm Street'!!!
This is the original that introduced Freddy to the world! Wes Craven made Freddy very scary, unlike the sequels! Nancy and her friends are having terrible and very realistic nightmares. When one of her friends dies, Nancy tries to figure out what is going on and who is doing it! Freddy Krueger looks awesome and scary, and Robert Englund is great at being Freddy! If you love Freddy, you'll love A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET!!!A Nightmare on Elm Street
Freddie's my hero!!
THIS is still one of the best horror/slasher films of all time! I have seen some of the cheap, low-budget, cheesy slasher films of the '80s recently. It is amazing how bad some of them are. But, I always had a certain weak spot for horror/slasher movies, so I enjoy them anyway. But, THIS, the original Nightmare... movie was a classy, well-done movie with a purpose, drive, respectable acting and for the most part a decent script. It was like they were actually trying to do a REAL movie, but it just happens to be a movie about Freddie Kruger, a dead guy who slashes up teenagers in their sleep...and who hasn't dreamed of doing that?? (only kidding) The special effects are well-done. The plot was decent for the genre. This is an actually respectable movie in a genre that has taken a lot of flack because of all the bad cheesy movies that have been spewed out like so much fake blood in a low-budget slasher flick. And of course, you have to give a nod to Robert Englund, the man who plays Freddie! My hero! The icon of slasher flick villains! There just AIN'T a better slasher villain out there! As a guy who likes most slasher flicks but especially appreciates GOOD slasher flicks, this really is one of the best of all time! All the sequels to this got progressively worse as they went along. This was the only one directed by Wes Craven. Plus, each subsequent sequel depended less and less on plot development...depending more on riding Freddie's coat tails, just being more gratuitously violent leaning on more special effects, and they're less of an actual movie. They became more a parade of gruesome special effects that eventually became an insult to the original. This is by far the best Nightmare... movie. Number 2 was also good. But from there, they just kept going downhill. Also, I think this was Johnny Depp's cinematic debut. To sum up, a good premise and plot, a reasonably respecable script and good acting, great special effects and Wes Craven directing made for one of the most respectable and best horror/slasher movies of all time! You're the man, Freddie! Get it! Watch it! Then watch out! You'll never sleep again!
A Nightmare on Elm Street
Classic Horror Movie
I LOVE this film, along with the rest of the movies in the series. If you've not seen this, then do yourself a favor and go out and buy it. I recommend this 2 disc version over the older single disc dvd. I already own the box set, but I desided to go out and buy this dvd as well...call me crazy. I found myself enjoying the Special Features disc alot. It has alot of things that the single dvd movie I already owned didn't offer.A Nightmare on Elm Street
Let the nightmares begin.
I saw this one when I was still a teenager.
One of the best slasher movies ever made.
Untouchable even today it spawned a ton of sequels that stunk, (except part 3).
Still, the original is a master(slasherpiece)piece.
Freddy was just evil and disgusting in this movie. Too bad he became so comical in the sequels.
He was truly terrifying in the original.
A great script, a great idea, a great cast. Johnny Depp!!!!!!!!!
He looks out of place in this movie considering his later works of genius.
It's still good to see where they got their start.
There are three.........and only three.
Nightmare on Elm St. part one.
The original Halloween.
And Friday the 13th part 2.
The best of the best when it comes to the horror, slasher movies.
Highly recommended for adults not kids.
