Never has science been so fun! - Teacher Librarian (October, 2004)

For centuries, the raw beauty of sand has fascinated artists and scientists alike. Comprising most of the earth's surface, sand is so durable that it is common for a grain to be over a million years old. And while all sand grains may look alike to the naked eye, they are as unique as the rocks from which they originate.

The Emmy-award winning "Where's Wilbur?" blends science and art in a fun mystery about a lost dog and a few grains of sand. The kids must find and save their beloved dog from the town's mad scientist, using a few clues, some scientific reasoning and plenty of creativity. The mentors they encounter along the way include a Native American sand painter who encourages them to look at the different kinds of sand around them, and a scientist who challenges their stereotypes about mad scientists in white coats.

Perfect for Teachers! The DVD bonus material includes a slideshow of over 20 magnified sand images from around the world so kids can explore the varying characteristics of sand. The DVD also includes a thorough study guide with background information, vocabulary words, video viewing tips and activities. The program correlates to the following National Science Education standards for students in grades K-4.

-Science as Inquiry (Standard A) -Physical Science (Standard B) -Earth and Space Science (Standard D) -History and Nature of Science (Standard G)

Experts agree that an integrative approach is a powerful way to teach kids scientific concepts. "Where's Wilbur?" uses an inquiry-based learning model to encourage kids to seek out creative ways of interpreting the world around them and invokes a vision of science as a continuous journey of discovery, imagination and creativity.

Age range: 6-10 (Grades 1-5)

This makes science fun!
As a school psychologist, I'd recommend this video to teachers or parents interested in educational videos. The DVD is fun to watch and does a pretty good job of teaching science concepts. Science can often be dry and this DVD makes a nice attempt to connect art to science...drawing in youngsters who may not feel excited by science alone. In one scene, a Native American artist, shows the kids how to "paint" with sand, which was pretty interesting. The DVD includes a teacher's guide, which could also be used by parents if they want to take the video to a more educational level. Highly recommended.Adventures in Science & Art: Where's Wilbur?
