The Soul of Mr. Lincoln
l know some of the reviewers criticized this film for not providing enough information about Abraham Lincoln.lf that is what you want then you can watch an A@e documentary or read some of the 100's of books that were written about him.
l heard somewhere that there are more books written about Lincoln than any other person in history [except Jesus]
This movie is more about his day to day living and his relationships with his neighbors in the small town of New Salem lllinois.And the tragic death of his first love Anne Rutledge
He eventually moves to Springfield and meets his future wife Mary Todd played by Ruth Gordon [mostly known for cult fav "Harold and Maude"}
She was the perfect choice to play this role ,she is so intense that she almost jumps off the screen .
Mr Lincoln is played perfectly by Raymond Massey ,the whole film has sort a magical feeling and you feel like you know this man and the locations seem really familiar .This is a great movie for kids too !Abe Lincoln in Illinois
Why isn't it on DVD
This would have to be a demonstration that no one can portray our image of Abraham Lincoln better than Raymond Massey. As an Australian, I cannot understand why the American film industry has not found it fit to produce this film on DVD or why the public are not calling for it to be put on DVD. I would have thought Americans would see it as priceless antique just like John Wayne's :The Long Trail".Abe Lincoln in Illinois
Raymond Massey "IS" Abraham Lincoln!
My wife and I agree that this movie is the best portrayal of one of America's finest presidents. I have collected and read many books on Mr. Lincoln and this production really does capture the spirit of what I believe the man "Lincoln" was like. I would highly recommend this to the one interested in living history.Abe Lincoln in Illinois
Fair
I'll have to admit that Massey certainly "looked" Lincoln. His slow speech and mannerisms matched period descriptions.
But other than that, this one left me cold. You can tell the producers relied heavily on annectdote and folklore to present Lincoln's life. The "Anne Rutledge" chapter has little to back it up historically speaking. Lincoln was more involved with Mary Ownes as his letters indicate. Ruth Gordon was acceptable as Mary Todd, and her shrewish nature boils to the surface towards the end. Howard Da Silva was certainly amusing as Jack Armstrong; the leader of the Clarey Grove boys. Another chuckle comes from Lincoln's attempts to drill the local militia in preparation for the Black Hawk War. Lincoln had forgotten the command to bring the line into file in order to pass through a gate. Lincoln asks Armstrong what to do and Jack replies, "Don't ask me, I'm only the sergeant". Captain Lincoln's solution ? He halts the company and dismisses them and they would re-form on the other side. Did it really happen that way ? Or was this another bit on folklore ?Abe Lincoln in Illinois
